Elk & Bison Prairie in LBL

Home | Land Between The Lakes | Elk & Bison Prairie

First opened to the public in 1996, the Elk & Bison Prairie at Land Between The Lakes represents a restoration of a native habitat that was lost more than a century ago.  While elk and bison roam this 700-acre area freely, it also home to numerous other wildlife species which thrive in the prairie, such as wild turkeys, a variety of birds, small game, and prairie mammals.

The prairie features three interpretive stops along its 3.5-mile loop road, offering visitors the opportunity to learn even more about the prairie ecosystem.  Motorcycles, bicycles, equestrian travel, and persons traveling on foot are prohibited from entering the prairie, which is located north of the Golden Pond Visitor Center on the Trace in LBL.

The Elk & Bison Prairie is open from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year.  The fee to enter is $5 per car (Entry cards can be purchased at the prairie or at any LBL facility. Credit cards are accepted.).  For commercial buses or vans, the entry fee is 50 cents per person, which must be paid at the Golden Pond Visitor Center.  A schedule of van tours and more information is available on their official site.
