Late Ledge Movement Keeps Kentucky Lake Bass Fishing Unpredictable
Written by Scott McGlinchey - Published on June 30, 2026
In this report I will talk about largemouth bass fishing in Kentucky Lake. Normally at about the middle of May there are a few places off shore (ledges) that will hold the first early movement of Largemouth Bass that leave the spawning shallows heading to summers deep water haunts. This is the first year out of my 12 years of fishing Kentucky Lake that those early bass did not show up in numbers. They just trickled out there to the early spots and then did the same as they moved all the way out to the main river ledges.
We are at the end of June and it seems new fish are still arriving out to the deep ledges. All in all the summer ledge fishing has been a little tougher than last year and last year 2025 was not as productive as 2024. The good thing is there are a lot of big bass still out on the summer ledges and drop offs. I have had some really good days with 5 or more big bass and other keepers to go with them. There have been a few days where the big ones just wouldn't bite and seemed ghost like. I had one friend texas rig a magnum fluke in a dark green color where he used his reel handle and drug the bait real slow occasionally using the reel handle to impart a little bit of action. He used that rig all day and did not want use any other baits. At about 1PM we returned to a great hole and he put on a clinic and boated several giant largemouth and smallmouth bass!
This summer while fishing the deep water ledges I've been using the 10 inch plum colored worm with 5//16 ounce weight most of the time and a 20 plus crankbait is shad or chartreuse colors. The scrounger heard swimbaits, a one ounce single-bladed spinner bait snatched off the bottom is another favorite.
If you're in town fishing for fun or here preparing for a tournament I am sure I can help you in either department. If you just want to enjoy a day of catching quality bass, panfish, catfish or are wanting to learn how to effectively fish offshore I am as good as it gets! I had excellent results in my career as a baseball and wrestling coach and use the same skills to help my clients learn bass fishing. I have over thirty years of ledge fishing experience and have spent 4000 hours diving underwater on various bodies of water observing fish in their home. If you want to book a trip with me please try to call me as the communication over the phone is much more effective and consumes less time than emails. I do respond to all forms of communication as quick as I can.
