Weather Change May Slow Crappie Down Some

Written by Doug Wynn - Published on March 15, 2024

Hey y’all from the Excel Bay Pro 230 Elite.

After a really bad week last week, I got to reset things this week. Dealing with insurance over my fire will come soon. It’s time to get into some great fish and back to guiding.

After having some trolling motor remote issues last week, I needed a trip to the lake to check everything out before having to depend on it later.

Monday was open so Cuz Rickie and I headed to the lake in late morning. The fishing was steady with several short fish for every keeper. We were pulling underspin jigs with assorted plastic trailers behind Off Shore Tackle OR38 mini boards. The big fish came in enough frequency to keep it interesting. A slab well over 16 inches and very egg laden was our best.

One fish that surprised us both was a Yellow Perch that was almost 13 inches long. No doubt that fish would have approached the KY state record prior to it being broken a couple weeks ago. She was released after a couple of photos. Hopefully she can contribute to a small population that exists in KY Lake and Barkley. I would love to see that population grow to a dependably catch. They rival Sauger on the plate.

The change in the weather plus a huge dose of fresh pollen in the water made fishing Wednesday tougher. The surface temperature rose to 58+ but our catch was slow. After trying several different depths and covers, we just had to concede but not before the largest Grinnell (Bowfin) I’ve ever seen from our lakes took it on itself to hit our offering then tangle every line we had out. These prehistoric survivors are one of the hardest fighters out there with a mouth full of sharp teeth. It was netted, photographed then released.

We’ve gone a week with very little overall increase in surface temps with cooler weather and rain coming in a couple of days. Maybe there is still time for the spawn to slow down until the rise in lake levels begin. We’ll see.

Be careful out there.

Welcome to our slice of Heaven.
