Winter Crappie Bite Holds Up

Written by Steve McCadams - Published on February 1, 2024

Kentucky Lake’s winter crappie bite has been pretty good lately. Several nice stringers have been caught now that pleasant weather and light winds have returned to the fishing scene.

Most anglers have credited their catches lately to midrange depths of 11 to 14 feet. A few anglers indicated they stalked some deeper brushpiles in 17 to 20 feet and found a few scattered fish holding around deep structure.

The majority of crappie fishermen credited their catch to jigs but not all as there are always a few who use minnows or tip a jig with minnows at times in hope of stimulating bites from stubborn fish.

Lake levels have been falling slowly after a slight rise back in late January and early February from some heavy rains. This week the reservoir was showing an elevation of 355.3, which is getting back down to the low ebb of winter pool.

Water color is clear. Surface temps have warmed slightly and are holding around the 42 to 45 degree range.

Watch for increased participation by anglers in the days ahead if mild weather continues. February is a month full of changing weather but it’s also known for producing some nice stringers of crappie if the wind allows anglers to get out and pursue open water areas.
