Back on the Water

Hey y'all! Capt Doug from the Storm Cat 230.

My recovery has progressed well enough for me to be allowed back into the boat with conditions.

Today was my 1st day on the lake since the late June tournament on Grenada. I was ordered to take it easy, have a companion in the boat, and stay away from the rough water. I complied. The fish didn't.

Cousin Rickie and I covered a lot of water with little to show. The wind did keep us from fishing some spots we would have otherwise. Our catch ended up being a nice largemouth, a couple keeper crappie, some short crappie and a 5 gallon bucket full of 8 inch yellow bass. Today was the yellows' lucky day. They all went back.

There were large amounts of baitfish everywhere we went. The crappie were scattered but not interested in our offerings. Even I have days like that.

I did have a Ky Lake giant gaspergoo grab a minnow crank and try to head to Tennessee with an Off Shore Tackle planer board. I finally got it to the boat where Rickie netted it. I can't say I was happy once we saw it was a drum. We were hoping for a blue catfish.

I got it unhooked and posed for a couple of photos before dropping it unceremoniously over the side. I then realized I had probably broken one of the rules from my doctor. The goo was much heavier than my weight lift limit! I was no worse for the wear.

I made the trip fine. I will be back on the lake a couple of times before my first guide trip on Tuesday. Hopefully the crappie will cooperate.

If you want to get a trip scheduled, send me a message thru my website. The lake is in good shape and the surface temp at 7 am was 80 degrees, much lower than we normally see in August. That is sure to change shortly.

Be careful out there.

Welcome to our slice of Heaven.
