Fishing Report Archives

It’s been a month since my last report, and I thought I would take the time to let you know what’s been going on.

Since my last report the fishing and the fishing conditions have been all over the place. A couple weeks of record warmth, followed by rain, and high water, unbelievable continuous wind, and major cold fronts.

I am talking about the type that drops the temperatures 40° and makes snow. I fished in a short sleeve shirt and 71° weather and watched it snow 5 hours later. Unbelievable!

These conditions have made the fishing inconsistent. In general the north end of both lakes continue to fish tough, with the exception of largemouth, and smallmouth bass fishing. This fishing has improved with several limits being caught in tournaments.

I am anxious to see how the limits are, when these fish move from the shallows post spawn.

Crappie fishing has gone for me, like shrimping went for Forrest Gump before the hurricane, TOUGH. Although some folks have been catching them, I don’t know them personally.

Folks with the livescope seem to be doing better than all the others. I personally haven’t been able to come up with any pattern that will produce day in and day out. It seems that the days they decide to bite, you’ll catch some.

If they don’t decide to bite, you are in for a long day. Now I am not saying that I haven’t taken home some fillets. I am just saying that on a daily basis, I can’t catch enough crappie to satisfy me, much less clients. This has caused several cancellations, and some reschedules.

This is hard on the pocketbook, but I have to sleep at night. I am not here to promise rainbows and unicorns, and not be able to deliver. I don’t find any fun taking a client and them not catching any fish. I am here to put you on fish and I will do my best to do so.

You shouldn’t just learn on a guide trip, you should catch fish too! Since the crappie fishing has been hard to come by, I have been in the search for white and yellow bass. These fish have also proven hard to keep up with.

Water elevations and current on the lake have not helped this cause. I thought I had a pretty good pattern on these fish, but I was mistaken. However, in the last week I have found some more fish for my clients. I do not know how long they will stay, but it will be what I am focusing my efforts on, until I locate something new.

As the days get longer we can hope the fishing improves. One thing for certain, I will be out there looking for bites. You don’t know until you go, and I have never caught them on the couch.
