Bass Are Now Spawning on Kentucky Lake

Written by Scott McGlinchey - Published on April 13, 2021

The spawn for bass and crappie has started and it has come about one week early. Crappie are being caught at different depths and some are in super shallow water. I am more familiar with the bass spawn and it started April 8th.

On April 8th we had some heavy winds so the shallow flat areas that were affected by the wind did not have fish spawning. Bass prefer to spawn in shallow water.

My favorite depths are 6 inches down to 3 feet and they like sheltered areas where wind and muddy water have no effect. If you can find a true sheltered area then you have found a spawning sanctuary. The bass will start the spawn when morning water temperatures reach 61 or 62 degrees during the spring. When it happens there is a change in their behavior and they get real shallow and spooky.

On April 8th I went out to check some crappie holes and to see if bass were spawning yet. Due to the wind I had to go into a big creek arm just to be able to fish. Sure enough, bass had moved up to spawn and I caught a quick limit of heavy bass all on a white trick worm and in water that was 8 inches down to 2 feet. The mission was accomplished so I quit early.

My favorite way to catch them during the spawn is with a weightless trick worm. I taught myself the technique many years ago in 1991. I have learned a lot about the bass spawn since then and have effectively used the trick worm on many lakes winning many tournaments.

Over the years I have taught a lot of anglers about the spawn and how to use trick worm to catch quality bass just for fun or to win tournaments. Learning about the spawn and how to use a trick worm is worth a lot more than a guide fee.

As a guide I specialize in taking people fishing to make sure they get to catch as many fish as possible. However, one of the best values to fishing with me is what you can learn in a day. I know for certain I am as good as anyone can be at teaching any aspect of bass fishing.

If you want to gain an edge in your tournament game I am here to help you. I have had several anglers win tournaments to include championship events.

I can show how to use your electronics to catch more fish on any lake. I use the same skills I honed as a baseball and wrestling coach to help anglers better their fishing game! I have traveled to clients home lakes where I have never fished to teach them how to catch more fish and win tournaments on their favorite lakes/bodies of water.
