Winter Officially Arrives Saturday

Late fall fishing will change over to early winter angling on Saturday as that's the official start of winter.

The Kentucky Lake fishing scene had yet another week of mixed weather but sandwiched in-between rainy days and thunderstorms were a few decent late fall days where light winds and moderate temperatures allowed anglers to get out there and scratch their itch.

Some decent stringers of crappie were taken recently by anglers targeting deeper depths and working the deep sides of main lake ledges. Depths of 18 to 25 feet have produced some scattered fish occupying that really deep structure.

Anglers are reporting some nice size fish too. Some anglers said their stringers had slabs knocking on the 2-pound threshold! Most also indicated the bulk of their catches were comprised of black crappie.

Baits of choice have continued to be live shiner minnows fished on tightline bottom bumping rigs or jigs tipped with minnows.

There are always a few anglers who fish jigs only and they were catching fish pretty good with such color combinations as black/chartreuse, red/chartreuse, blue/chartreuse with skirts displaying sparkle and some bubble gum/chartreuse.

Boats working midrange depths of 8 to 12 feet were struggling to put together any decent numbers as fish there were quite scattered.

Lake levels this week were resting around the 354.7 range and had fluctuated slightly from the weekend. However, heavy rains on Monday across the region will likely send a lot of water into the reservoir so watch for lake levels to rise in the coming days.

Water color was been clear across most of the reservoir despite the heavy rains. Surface temperatures are handing around the 46 to 49 degree range.

Bass fishermen have been sluggish to report any consistent activity the last few weeks. Some are casting leadheads with grubs or tossing hair jigs with pork trailers in an attempt to fool a few smallmouth into biting.

The overall shallow bite for bass anglers appears to be slow as of late.
