The new Eggners Ferry Bridge opened two lanes of traffic on April 8th.

Overview

US 68/KY 80 is the only east-west gateway into the Land Between The Lakes.  The highway also serves as the primary east-west connector for Murray and Cadiz.  The project calls for a completed four-lane highway  from Mayfield through Murray, Aurora, Land Between The Lakes and on to Cadiz.

Portions of the four-lane highway have opened, including the stretch from Murray to Aurora and from Mayfield to Murray.  The LBL portion is also complete.

The bridges spanning Kentucky Lake & Lake Barkley which carry US 68/KY 80 have been labeled as "Functionally Obsolete" by transportation officials.

The bridges are over 80 years of age (built in 1932).  Continuing budget constraints have delayed the bridges for decades.  However, construction has started on Kentucky Lake's new bridge.  Kentucky Lake's bridge should be completed by 2016 with Barkley's finished in 2017.

The price tag for both bridges is estimated at $300 million.

Here is a Project Timeline that dates back to 1992.  Back in those days, the bridges were anticipated being built and ready for traffic near the turn of the century.
