Weather Woes Challenge Late Fall Fishing

Kentucky Lake anglers haven’t had much help from the weatherman this past week as high winds combined with some rainy days to deliver nasty conditions. However, temperatures have been somewhat above average so the warm weather has been one footnote to this late fall fishing phase. Lake levels have been dancing around the 356 range at Kentucky Dam due to some heavy rains that saw an increase in elevation this past week. Upstream at New Johnsonville the elevation was 355.8, up several inches from the previous week due to influence from rain and runoff both locally and upstream in the TVA valley. Surface temperatures were ranging around the low to mid 50’s. A little stain has entered the reservoir from all the runoff and some creeks are dingy but not muddy while most of the main lake areas are clear. A few bass have been caught by anglers working crankbaits on gravel banks and rocky points. Those shad colored variations are still producing as have some jig and craw combos at times. Some largemouth and white bass continue to chase shad at times over some shallow flats where tossing chrome colored Rattle Traps and Strike Kings Red-eye shad were appealing to the darting fish on some feeding frenzies at times. Crappie action was fair with some fish lingering in 8 to 12 foot stakebeds and brushpiles. Deeper ledges in the main lake were holding fish too as drop-offs with structure residing in the 16 to 20 foot depths were attracting fish as well. Unfortunately, the warm windy days have been tough to hold a boat in the open water areas so most anglers have been restricted to fishing back in the bays to dodge the wind. There have been a few times when wind subsided and boaters were able to venture out and find fish hitting pretty good. Rain chances are expected to increase this weekend before a cool snap arrives on Sunday, which may cool things off a bit. This late fall and pre winter fishing phase is at the mercy of Mother Nature as to wind and temperature but if you are fortunate enough to pick a decent day then fishing is pretty good.
