Drag Boat Races Return

The Kentucky Drag Boat Association returns to Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area to hostdrag boat races June 6-7, July 4-5, and August 1-2. The races will take place in Pisgah Bay on Kentucky Lake this summer. Races run from 10am to 5pm, depending on weather and number of participants. Time trials will be held on Saturday and final races on Sunday. Spectators can park and watch the races at Birmingham Ferry Backcountry Area.

Thursday, before each set of races, campsites 24-29 at Birmingham Ferry Backcountry Area will close and remain closed for the weekend. Birmingham Ferry boat ramp will close Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to the public. There is a spectator fee of $5 per person; children under 12 are free. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or ground blankets for watching the races.

“The Kentucky Drag Boat Association summer races provide heart-pounding fun,” said Gary Hawkins, Recreation Program Specialist at Land Between The Lakes. “It’s a great event for spectators and racers! These races add an exciting, high-speed element to all the other great outdoor recreation events around the region.”

The drag boat races feature blown-alcohol boats, hydros and jet-powered boats, and flat-bottom racers skimming the water at speeds exceeding 150 mph. For more information contact the Kentucky Drag Boat Association at 800-732-0088 or visit www.kdba.net.
