Finding Time for a Quick Escape: The North Canal Loop Trail

August 12, 2025 | Lakin' It with Lydia

Looking to connect with nature but short on time? The North Canal Loop Trail is the perfect solution and a personal favorite of mine for a quick escape. Located right at the North Welcome Station in Land Between the Lakes, it's easily accessible with plenty of parking available. The adventure begins as you walk through the grass behind the welcome sign, cross a small bridge, and instantly find yourself immersed in the serene forest.

The trail is exceptionally well-maintained, making it ideal for a variety of activities - whether you're hiking, walking your dog, biking, or jogging. While you can always spot wildlife in LBL, a recent hike treated me to a sight of several brown lizards darting around. I'm no expert, but their presence was a fun reminder of the life thriving just off the path. Parts of the trail also offer a unique perspective on the area's recent history, taking you through the path of the 2021 tornado. It's a humbling experience to witness nature's slow and steady process of reclaiming the landscape.

My absolute favorite part, however, is the stunning overlook over Kentucky Lake. The panoramic view from up high is simply breathtaking and provides a fantastic reward for your efforts. As the trail winds down, you cross a few more bridges and a creek, and the scenery subtly shifts from broad-leaf trees to cedar trees. This change is your signal that you've looped back to the welcome station.

Before you leave, don't forget to pop inside the North Welcome Station. It's a great spot to grab a little keepsake or your very own LBL shirt to remember your adventure.

Happy trails!
