A New Year’s Day Walk Around Hematite Lake
December 29, 2025 | Lakin' It with Lydia
For many people in the Land Between the Lakes area, the new year doesn’t begin with noise or big resolutions. It starts outside — with cool air, quiet water, and the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other.
Each New Year’s Day, locals gather for a guided hike around Hematite Lake, hosted by the Friends of Land Between the Lakes. It’s become a meaningful way to welcome the year ahead, not by rushing into goals, but by slowing down and being present in a place that feels grounding and familiar.
The Hematite Trail is an easy loop that follows the shoreline and winds through peaceful wooded areas. People show up with friends, family, or on their own, and it never feels out of place. Conversations happen naturally, silence is welcome, and the shared experience creates an easy sense of connection — especially for anyone who might be feeling reflective or even a little alone at the start of a new year.
If spending more time outdoors is one of your intentions this year, this hike is a gentle way to begin. There’s no pressure to perform or keep pace. Just fresh air, movement, and a reminder that sometimes the best way to start something new is simply to show up.
New Year’s Day Hike Details
The hike takes place on January 1, with a 10:00 a.m. meeting time in the Hematite Lake parking lot at Land Between the Lakes. The guided walk follows the Hematite Trail and is suitable for most ages and experience levels.
