A Magical Evening: Dining with Hummingbirds at the Woodlands Nature Station

August 18, 2025 | Lakin' It with Lydia

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending a special members-only Dinner with Hummingbirds at the Woodlands Nature Station, and it was a truly magical experience. The evening was dedicated to supporting the Friends of LBL's Environmental Education Program, a vital initiative that helps children connect with and learn about the natural world. Every dollar raised from the silent and live auctions was matched by the Forest Service, making every donation twice as impactful.

The setting was perfect. As we dined, dozens of hummingbirds buzzed all around us, providing an up-close-and-personal look at these incredible birds. We even had a chance to see some of the Nature Station's resident birds, including Ferris, the red-tailed hawk, and tiny Rose, the screech owl.

It was a fantastic way to appreciate the sheer wonder of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, the only species of hummingbird found in Kentucky. These little powerhouses can beat their wings over 50 times per second and will soon begin their long migration south, a journey that's hard to fathom for such a tiny creature. It’s no wonder they spend their days eating up to twice their body weight to fuel up!

While this particular dinner was exclusive to members, the Woodlands Nature Station also hosted three public dinners, and anyone can become a member of the Friends of LBL. Your membership helps fund these vital conservation and education programs, and you also receive great perks like discounts at gift shops and invitations to special member-only events in the future.
