A Starry Night Out: The Timeless Charm of the Calvert Drive-In
September 16, 2025 | Lakin' It with Lydia
Right there on Highway 68, just a short drive from Kentucky Lake, you'll find one of the most unique and visible roadside attractions in the region: the Calvert Drive-In. This iconic local landmark offers a unique and memorable experience that's hard to find elsewhere.
Operating since 1953, this single-screen drive-in is one of the last remaining places where you can enjoy a double feature from the comfort of your car, a cozy lawn chair, or a picnic blanket. It's a fantastic outing for all ages, making it ideal for family adventures, casual get-togethers with friends, or a memorable date night. And here’s an exciting fact: the Calvert Drive-In is open year-round, so you can enjoy this classic experience no matter the season!
The night we visited, we caught a double feature of Toy Story followed by The Incredibles 4. Like many families with young children, we headed out after the first movie to get the little ones to bed. This often means that if you arrive a little later, you might find a chance to move closer to the screen for the second feature.
For the best audio experience, you can tune into the designated station on your car radio. They also offer portable radio speakers for rent at the concession stand, or you can bring your own.
Speaking of the concession stand, it's famous for more than just movie snacks! Their amazing burgers are so popular that it's not uncommon for people to simply drive up to the window just to grab dinner. Of course, they also offer classic movie popcorn, hot dogs, candy, and more. I highly recommend arriving early to snag a good spot and load up on your snacks before the show starts. If you find yourself in line, you can even enjoy some vintage arcade games!
For their weekly movie schedule and showtimes, be sure to check their Facebook page and give them a follow. This is a perfect way to make new memories while enjoying a treasured piece of local history!
