Kentucky's Free Fishing Weekend

May 28, 2017 | Staff Report

Each year Kentucky offers free fishing days on the first weekend in June. The 2017 dates for Free Fishing Weekend is Saturday and Sunday, June 3-4.

During this weekend no fishing license is required of residents or non-residents to fish any of Kentucky's waters, including the Kentucky portion of Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley.

All other fishing regulations remain in effect. Free fishing days are offered to promote fishing and National Fishing Week. It's a great way to introduce the sport of fishing to kids and adults who have never fished before.

At Kentucky and Barkley Lakes, bank fishing for catfish and bluegill are usually popular during this time of the year. Find some rocky shorelines, such as man-made riprap banks for catfish. Try fishing around docks (if permitted) and banks in covered areas or near structure for bluegill.

Mornings and evenings are best times to fish. The bite for catfish and bluegill should be excellent for Free Fishing Weekend!
