Prescribed Burns Planned for February at Land Between the Lakes

February 14, 2017 | Press Release from Land Between The Lakes

February 14, 2017 – The Forest Service anticipates conducting several prescribed burns within administrative sites at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area beginning in February 2017.

“Approximately 940 acres are included in the planned prescribed burns,” says Todd Lerke, Fire Management Specialist at Land Between the Lakes. “Prescribed fire is weather dependent. We have to have the right conditions to have a successful burn with the least smoke impact to surrounding communities.”
Administrative sites planned for prescribed burns in early spring 2017 include, but are not limited to:

• Hillman Ferry Campground
• Piney Campground
• Homeplace 1850s Farm
• A portion of the Elk & Bison Prairie

Prescribed burns are regularly implemented within high use areas to reduce accumulation of dry fuels and to recycle nutrients back into the soil.

Land Between the Lakes will notify local media outlets on days when prescribed burns are scheduled. Notices can be found at www.landbetweenthelakes.us/alerts-notices or by calling toll free 800-525-7077 or in Kentucky call 270-924-2000.
