May Fishing Update

Written by Eric Ashley - Published on May 5, 2021

It’s been a few weeks since I last checked in, so I thought I would sit down and bring everyone up to speed.

I thought April Fools’ Day ended on April 1. However, it seems that I was a fool the whole month long instead. After having what I thought was a pretty good pattern going in March, cold fronts, rain, wind, and water fluctuations took centerstage.

Even with a little calmer weather towards the end of the month of April, it took me several days to finally find some fish again, and they weren’t in many spots. This made for some poor production out of my boat several days with clients.

Lots of apologies were given but that doesn’t replace the fact that our catch was less than stellar. To say the least, I couldn’t wait for May to get here.

As I stated in my last report, bass fishing continues to be good on the north end of the lakes. Crappie fishing, continues to be hit and miss as I hear anglers grumbling at the boat ramp. Folks with livescope still seem to produce, as well as those trolling crank baits.

The white bass bite has continued to be good today as well. I’ve had days where I caught them good, but some poor days, too. Hopefully, these fish will continue to be around a while. Even though some days of fishing has been poor for them, it can change in a moments notice and get hot quick.

The bluegill fishing is starting up and I hope We get some consistent weather for it. Warm days and nights will have the fish near the beds to be caught, making for some good action when you can locate them. Cat fishing should start to really get going as well in the next couple of weeks as well.

For those of you who read and follow my reports, thank you. You may have sensed the frustration in my last report. I told you that you would get the good, the bad, and the ugly. I am sorry if I was negative in anyway, but I was struggling to find a good at the time.

For those who are wondering, the north end of the lakes are still fishing tough. Myself and some other guides have struggled in April. I could understand if I wasn’t catching and everyone else was. Then I would say it was just me. However, I know too many good fisherman who have struggled in the month of April for panfish.

The good news is that the fishing is improving. I am fishing 5 to 6 days a week, with and without clients, to stay on top of fish movements. Some good stable weather would help things a lot. This should make for much better fishing in the weeks to come.

I will be off the water to take the boat in for some upgrades and then will be back out looking for bites. I have a few dates left at the end of May and several over the summer if anyone is interested. I will do my best to put you on fish and show you a good time. Thank you and tight lines!
