Mid-Spawn Crappie Fishing

Written by Josh Lovett - Published on April 30, 2021

What a week of crappie fishing we have had! The first of last week started out tough for this fisherman. I got home from vacation and like always this time of year, the water had dropped 3'.

The pattern I had left behind had waned tremendously through the unstable conditions of the water and the weather. we did finish the week strong though catching good numbers and a great creel size.

The spring for me is all about adjustments to varying conditions. I changed up and looked for fish that were a little deeper than I had been catching them in. My best catches were in 10-12' of water.

We had several year classes of fish from 10" to over 2 lbs. Things are looking great as they seem to be moving in and out in waves.

I caught fish from both the pre and post spawn of both species. I would assume that we will see most fish in a post spawn pattern within a week or two.

I'm sure that there will be a few stragglers still moving up but I would imagine the bite will take a turn south for the next few weeks. However, with warmer weather on the horizon I am looking forward to the coming bluegill and redear season and will be starting to fish for those in the upcoming weeks.

My best tactics have still been single poling jigs on structure and chasing a few in open water. I still have a few dates left in May so give me a yell if you'd like to get out and catch a few!
