Late Fall Fishing Surge

Written by Steve McCadams - Published on December 10, 2020

Kentucky Lake’s late fall fishing had yet another surge in activity this week. Thanks to midweek temps rebounding to the low to mid-60’s range that teamed up with light winds the fishing scene has been robust!

There was a time here when very few boats were seen on the lake in early to mid-December. Not so anymore!

Dandy stringers of crappie are being taken on a regular basis. Anglers fishing a variety of depths have found buried treasures while stalking stakebeds and brushpiles in 8 to 14 feet.

In additional to the midrange depths a few deep water enthusiasts have discovered enough fish relating to main lake ledges to keep them busy too. Depths of 18 to 22 feet have given up some fish as well when boaters found deep structure on the ledges.

Several anglers report success when using just a plain jig. Others credit their catches to jigs tipped with white, pink or chartreuse Berkley Power Bait crappie nibbles. And, live minnows are still on the menu too as most boats continue to keep the minnow buck handy and frequently tip a jig with a minnow to enhance bites.

Popular jig skirt colors and leadhead choices have ranged from blue/chartreuse to pink/pearl at times. Even some dull colors such as motor oil with gold glitter and clear with silver sparkle have paid dividends at times.

Leadhead color choices have ranged from florescent green or orange to while or just unpainted neutral choices.

Seems quite a few anglers have managed to catch limits lately too. More so than they did back in the summer or early fall.

Present conditions on Kentucky Lake show elevation around the 354.9 range at midweek around the Kentucky Dam sector. Upstream in the New Johnsonville area lake levels were slightly higher and in the 355.2 range.

Surface temperatures were in the 48 to 49 degree range. Water color remains clear as very little rain has fallen in the region with minimal runoff.

Some reports are still coming in from successful catfishermen. There has been current in the main river channel this week so that usually works in favor of ole’ whiskers going on the prowl.

Still producing have been night crawlers with some anglers opting to use big minnows or cut bait at times. Depths of 35 to 45 feet have produced some nice stringers lately.

Bass fishermen haven’t been bragging too much as to their success rate but there have been occasional reports of a dandy smallmouth showing up from anglers fishing the east side of the reservoir.

A lot of anglers are casting twister tail grubs on leadheads or tossing swim baits at times. Crankbaits are always among the fall arsenal too as lure choices.
