Topwater Fishing Best in Three Years

Written by Scott McGlinchey - Published on September 30, 2020

We are getting into the later part of the fall season with water temperatures falling and lake levels nearing winter pool. The aftershock of hurricanes brought many days of easterly winds causing tougher fishing conditions. During tough conditions you really have to cover the water effectively and be there when fish want to bite.

When it's tough I will glance at solunar tables to see when fish and wildlife are most active and many days the forecasts are accurate. The good thing is the bass fishing has really picked up and I have been catching more of the bigger fish and less small fish.

This fall I have not fished as many drop offs as past years and that is probably due to the top water fishing being significantly better this year than the last three years. I am still using the whopper plopper and the sexy dawg with an occasional buzzbait mixed in. Baits like small shallow crankbaits or floating jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, and other poppers will work also.

I'm still fishing shallows flats out on main lake areas and back in creek arms. Depths I am fishing are 3 feet to 6 inches but you can certainly catch them deeper. I just like shallow fall fishing, especially this year. In the days to come there will be tough days and some days the fish will move a little from the day before. You always have to fish for the fish of today and use the wind to your advantage.

If your in town fishing for fun or here preparing for a tournament, I am sure I can help you in either department.

If your wanting to learn how to effectively fish offshore or catch bass in super shallow water I am as good as it gets! I had excellent results in my career as a baseball and wrestling coach and use the same skills to help my clients learn bass fishing.

I have 32 years of ledge fishing experience and would like nothing more than to take all of you out fishing! If you want to book a trip with me please try to call me as the communication over the phone is much more effective and consumes less time than emails. I do respond to all forms of communication as quick as I can.

Please check out and like my Shelldivers Guide Service Facebook page and Shelldiversguide.com. I will have additional pictures posted some are underwater photos of fish and shellbeds.
