Topwater Bass Bite Beginning to Pick Up

Written by Scott McGlinchey - Published on August 24, 2020

The topwater fishing has really picked up here on Kentucky Lake. On a recent trip between three of us we caught about 40 bass and had 10 nice keepers. Quite a few of the fish were smallmouth. The baits we used were one whopper plopper and two sexy shads.

The whopper plopper out fished the sexy shad. You never know which bait will work the best till you try a few. Over the years I have used many different poppers, stick baits, and other top water baits.

If you are in the right place and cover the water effectively they all will work. There is almost always a decent morning and a predictable evening flurry, but some days, even when the sun is out, they will feed all day in the shallow flat areas.

Shallow flat areas can be in a bay or creek arm or out on the main lake. Over the years many anglers feel the main lake flats hold larger fish.

Offshore drop offs are still holding fish and some days during this fall period the ledge is better than shallow topwater fishing. There are some ledges that actually improve in August and September as the bass use them as staging areas. These ledge fish are usually larger.

The most unique feature for 2020 is the abundance of baitfish which are in both deep and shallow water. I have also seen good schools of white bass feeding on the shad schools and some of the white bass schools are holding good sized fish. Many times after the white bass frenzy stops the largemouth and or smallmouth will move in behind them to clean up on the shad that are injured and scattered.

Right now is a great time to be out fishing on Kentucky or Barkley Lake - it is some of the best fishing we have had in a few years!

As a guide I specialize in taking people fishing to make sure they get to catch as many fish as possible. However, one of the best values to fishing with me is what you can learn in a day. I know for certain I am as good as anyone can be at teaching any aspect of bass fishing. If your wanting to gain an edge in your tournament game I am here to help you. I have had several anglers win tournaments to include championship events. I can show how to use your electronics to catch more fish on any lake.

I use the same skills I honed as a baseball and wrestling coach to help anglers better their fishing game! I have traveled to clients home lakes where I have never fished to teach them how to catch more fish and win tournaments on their favorite lakes/bodies of water.
