New Eggners Ferry Bridge to Open Soon
March 16, 2016 - Members of the media were invited to tour the new Eggners Ferry Bridge at Kentucky Lake today as crews continued their work on the new $131.5 million structure. Keith Todd, Kentucky Department of Transportation District 1 spokesman, told us that the new bridge will open in two to three weeks.
Two lanes of traffic will open on the new bridge in the future west-bound lanes. The remaining part of the bridge, including the future east-bound lanes and the pedestrian walkway, will be closed while the old Eggners Ferry Bridge is demolished.
Now construction crews are continuing to work on concrete decking as well as the railings along the bridge. They are also working on the joints where the main basket-handle span meets the approaches.
Once completed, the new four-lane bridge will feature 11-foot lanes with a safety barrier in the middle as well as a pedestrian and bike path. The pedestrian and bike path will be illuminated at night as well as the main span of the bridge.
As time progresses, an opening date will be set for the new bridge. At this point in time, it is believed to be open for traffic by the end of March or the first week of April. Todd also told us that the new bridge will keep the Eggners Ferry name.
Below are some photos of the bridge we took this afternoon.
