This year the Homeplace focuses on the Plain and Fancy Quilts made on farms in 1850s. Discover what makes a quilt "fancy" or plain.

This weekend the farm women put away their spinning wheels and invite their quilting friends and neighbors to the annual spring quilting bee. Pick up a needle and thimble and add a few stitches to our new "fancy" quilt, double Irish chain help us finish our "plain" pinwheel quilt, or the quilted petticoat.

Celebrating the Homeplace's 40th anniversary, the double pen house will feature a display of quilts made on the farm by the quilters/interpreters from the early beginnings of the living history museum.

New to quilting? Purchase a Homeplace quilt kit featuring reproduction fabric used for our period clothing, bring it to the farm to get help to hand sew the quilt square and begin your quilting obsession. Want to learn something more challenging? Try your hand at applique quilting and other techniques used to make a fancy quilt. Popular 1850 quilt patterns will be available for you to take home and make your own heirloom.

Children's sewing cards will be available to practice their stitches. If stitching isn't your cup of tea, gather a team and play a rousing game of horse shoes, visit with the farm animals, or watch the blacksmith turn an iron bar into something useful.

Next to Normal is an unflinching look at a suburban family struggling with the effects of mental illness. Dad's an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling manic depression for sixteen years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family's story with love, sympathy and heart. This deeply moving piece of theatre is an emotional powerhouse that addresses such issues as grieving a loss, ethics in modern psychiatry, and suburban life. Winner of three 2009 Tony Awards and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize.

Cannons will ring out along the Tennessee River in both Benton and Humphreys County, Tennessee, to commemorate the 154th anniversary of the Civil War Battle of Johnsonville. The Civil War battle occurred on November 4, 1864 when Confederate troops under General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked the Union supply base at Johnsonville from the Benton County side of the river. This attack resulted in the near destruction of the Federal supply base at Johnsonville. This year's event will take place between two Tennessee State Parks, with a Federal encampment at Johnsonville State Historic Park in Humphreys County and a Confederate encampment at Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park located in Benton County. Both parks will feature artillery, infantry and civilian demonstrations throughout the day. The Battle of Johnsonville is the only historical event in the country to have two state parks dedicated to its remembrance.
