"Good homemade lard is one of the choicest fats the house wife can use."

Our stove is hot and small pieces of hog fat are melting or rendering down. Soon the sweet cracklins' will float to the top and the liquid fat will be poured off into the lard stand to cool. Smokehouse Magic - Smoking The Pork at The Homeplace

Follow your nose to the smokehouse. Peek inside and smell the rich aroma as the green hickory wood works its magic on the salted pork hanging just above the swirling gray smoke. Hey kids! Would you like to experience what it would be like to work as a zookeeper? Here's your chance! Spend the afternoon with our naturalists and learn the basics of taking care of reptiles, birds, and mammals. What are some of the important needs that these different animals have? Then get some hands-on experience by helping our naturalists with animal care duties such as feeding, cleaning, and handling some of the animals. Be sure to collect at least 3 stamps in your passport to receive your OWLS degree! Back in the 1800s, Western Kentucky and Tennessee were home to a thriving iron industry, including 8 furnaces in the Land Between the Lakes area. This industry brought economic benefits, but also had environmental consequences such as near-extinction of wild turkeys. Do you like to take pictures of nature? Are you having trouble getting that one photo to turn out just right? Join us for a hands-on workshop with instructors Denise Boaz and Gross Magee. They will show photos on the big screen in our theater and lead a discussion on the qualities of the photos, share tips on how to improve them through photographic technique, composition, editing, and more. Denise Boaz is a published and award-winning professional local photographer; Gross Magee is a lecturer in commercial photography and digital imaging at Murray State University. Instructors will be available during the morning to answer questions for those who come early to shoot photos. $15 per person. Fee includes Nature Station admission.
