Major Highways in
Stewart County Stewart County is served by several major arteries.
US Highway 79 North
This four-lane highway in the city, two-lanes in the county,
is a major artery though Tennessee. The road provides Dover a
connection with Clarksville and points northward to Russellville,
KY.
US Highway 79 South
The other end of the highway, which is two lanes once you
get out of Dover, offers a third lane for trucks on steep grades in the
western part of the county. US 79 South connects Dover with Paris,
Memphis, and eventually ends in Round Rock, Texas.
Tennessee Highway 49
Tennessee Highway 49 is a scenic two-lane highway that
begins at Dover and takes you to Erin, Charlotte, Ashland City, and
eventually Springfield, TN.
Tennessee Highway 120
This two-lane road begins just north of Cumberland City at
Tennessee 233. It heads north to US Highway 79 and on to Bumpus
Mills, TN. It continues north to the Kentucky/Tennessee border and
becomes Kentucky 139. Kentucky 139 goes to Cadiz, KY.
Tennessee Highway 149
This two-lane road serves Cumberland City and the extreme
southeastern portion of Stewart County. Tennessee 149 begins at
Erin, TN, and heads on to Clarksville.
Tennessee Highway 232
Tennessee Highway 232 is a winding two-lane highway that
begins about five miles east of Kentucky Lake on US Highway 79 in Stewart
County. It heads south through Houston County to US Highway
70. It then continues south until it reaches the Interstate
40/Tennessee 13 Interchange.
Tennessee Highway 233
Tennessee 233 is a two-lane highway that stretches from
Cumberland City at the ferry on the Cumberland River to US Highway 79 in
western Montgomery County.
The Trace
Before the Land Between The Lakes was created, this was
Tennessee 49. Now called The Trace, this scenic, two-lane highway
begins at Dover on US Highway 79 and heads north 45 miles to Lake City,
KY. This is a very beautiful road that takes you right through the
middle of the Land Between The Lakes.
Rail
Service in Stewart County
The City of Dover has never seen the reality of a
railroad; however, Stewart County has. The Louisville and
Nashville Railroad ran through the extreme southeastern portion of
Stewart County through Cumberland City. The railroad was actually
constructed back in the 1860s and served as a major line through the
turn of the century. However, rail transportation began to slow
and eventually stopped in the 1970s. The tracks were pulled in
Houston County, forever changing the railroad history in the area.
And then, in 1997, after 19 years of nothing on the rails, R.J. Corman
literally saved the abandoned railroad line. An 18-mile portion of
the railroad still existed in Cumberland City that connected with a main
line in Clarksville, TN. R.J. Corman Railroad Company refurbished
the tracks and on October 12, 1999, the first train rolled down the
tracks.
