When visitors to the Lakes set out to camp,
most of them turn to one of the many
campgrounds
in the surrounding area. However,
there are those select few who choose to brave the great outdoors without
the comforts that traditional campgrounds have to offer. They choose
to merge with nature through the sport of backcountry camping.
As someone who enjoys backcountry camping 5-6
times per season, I have compiled a quick list for those of you who'd like
to try it.
1. Get a permit - you can get
these from the visitors center at Golden Pond. Nightly permits and
seasonal permits are available.
2. Find the perfect spot -
With over 170,000 acres of
undeveloped land, and over 300 miles of shoreline, LBL is a camper's
dream. Don't be afraid to get off the beaten path. Explore the many
roads and paths that dead-end at the water. Maps with all the roads
and trails can be found at the visitors center.
3. Check the
weather in advance.
4. Check for burn bans by calling the LBL office at
1-800-LBL-7077.
5. Bug spray, Bug Spray, Bug spray.
6. Pack your supplies, gather your friends and family, and go
camping!
Backcountry Camping: serene, fulfilling,
peaceful, exciting, beautiful. If you're still not convinced, check
